I went to JIM 2000 in Metz and had fun
talking to friends and presenting a talk.

The long awaited announcement
of the Year 2000 Darwin Awards.

I went to SWAT 2000 in Bergen and had a fruitful
workshop (captured on film mostly at meals; here are
Jan Arne, Frances and Mike waiting for lunch and
Bengt, Esko, myself and Fredrik at the banquet table).

Then, with Jan Arne, we hiked the Rondane mountains

We hiked, paddled (here, in front of Bitov castle)
and biked (here's another castle, Vranov) in Moravia
with Honza and his kids
(there are also other activities one can get involved in Moravia)

Back in Eugene, we hiked the Cascades
(lower and higher),
later Yael and Giora and I
together with other good folks
helped Gary and Marylin.

On Spring Break, we went to
Guadalajara and vicinity
(a visit with Juan at U. of Michoacan was an added bonus)

Yael and friends are finishing up their senior year

and GRADUATING!

Here is the schedule

I spent it in Barcelona; family joined me for the holidays

The first two months, I migrated to Hong Kong
where there were a lot new images to take in:

I stayed on Chinese University campus,

witnessed the famous Lunar New Year Parade and fireworks,

admired the Hong Kong Island waterfront and the modern architecture,

went on three great hikes
(but took my camera only on Sharp Peak and on Cloudy Peak),

In general, I found Hong Kong to be a city of contrasts

and met there a lot of old and new friends

(not to mention helping Rex and Miriam move)

I then moved over the equator to Australia
where I took some more pictures:

I admired the new (to me) Very Old World Nature

and the shape of newer Old World views,

The rest of my sabbatical I spent in
Italy (L'Aquila) and in Czech Republic (Prague)

The trip to Scandinavia included
visit to my Alma Mater with Maxine and Stefan

A friend from Szczecin sent me a clip on my old high school

Court graduated from 'Ford in front of the extended family!

An early European trip included SIROCCO in Norrland

One of Maxine's projects became a reality: trip to California missions

Yael graduated from STEP
and the whole family cheered!

I visited Jan Arne and Fedya in Bergen and later
participated in another great WG in Bad Honnef

Another long-time project checked-off: bike trip along Mosel

Just before the start of classes, Gary and I hiked to the top of Olallie Mountain for
a breathtaking view of the Cascades from Lowder Mountain, through Mt. Hood,
Mt. Jefferson, Three Finger Jack, Mt. Washington, the Three Sisters, Broken Top,
Mt. Bachelor to Cultus Mountain (Maiden Peak, Mt. Thielsen and Diamond Peak
unfortunately out of the picture).

An unfortunate event brought about a week of fun and profit
including a talk by Honza,
a roast by Jan Arne and
a hike on the coast

As every year, the family and friends vacationed in the mountains.

A quick trip to Stockholm to help Stefan to get over the hump;
I used the rest of the jet-lag time to walk in the wintery Stockholm

After some time in the last year of his doctoral program,
the National Champ passed his defense!
We were there and helped him celebrate.

I visited Jan Arne in Montpeyroux

and attended Sirocco in Mont Saint Michel

I started in Metz at WG with friends

and continued with the family

along Mosel, Sahr, Sauer and Rhein

Taking a break from being a department head

I went to a workshop in Prague

and then for a rushed trip to Sendai
