Biography

Joe Sventek is a Professor in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Oregon; he was the Head of the Department from 2014-2020; he is also the Director of the Data Science Program. Prior to joining the University of Oregon, Joe held the following posts:

• 1979-1986: member of technical staff, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA
• 1986-1990: deputy chief architect, Advanced Networked Systems Architecture project, Cambridge, England
• 1990-1999: distinguished engineer, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Palo Alto, CA
• 1999-2002: director, Agilent Labs Scotland, Edinburgh, Scotland
• 2002-2010: Professor of Communication Systems, Department of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland
• 2010-2014: Professor and Head of School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland.

Outside interests

• play with my granddaughters, Sonora and Aria
