Overview

The plan is to have three phases to this process:

• Phase 1: define space of in situ configurations
• Phase 2: reach consensus on names for configurations
• Phase 3: generate report

Phase 1

The goal of Phase 1 is to flesh out the space of in situ techniques.

Phase 1 will consist of two sub-phases, Phase 1A and Phase 1B:

• Phase 1A: explore the space of in situ configurations. In this phase, we will offer up properties that we view that are essential when describing an in situ configuration. All potential properties that we think of should be considered. The wiki page for ideas for this phase go here: Phase 1A: identifying in situ use cases
• Phase 1B: digest the ideas from Phase 1A and down-select to a fixed number of in situ configurations that we think are distinct enough to merit their own unique name. There are likely levels of granularity here, and we will have to reach consensus on how finely to sub-divide sets. The process for reaching consensus in this phase is a combination of emails and telecons. Participation in either is optional, although we hope to hear from all participants in some form or another.

NOTE: this phase has stretched out. We did a Phase 1C, which was a telecon to converge better. We are now doing a Phase 1D, which will set up a survey.

Phase 2

The goal of this phase is to converge on names. This will use the configurations identified in Phase 1B. Again, the plan is to reach consensus in this phase via a combination of emails and telecons. And, again, participation in either is optional, although we hope to hear from all participants in some form or another.

Phase 3

This phase will involve writing up our categorizations and terminology in a report. This report will be written by a volunteer subset of our group, and then the larger group will comment before publication.

Timeline

This timeline was aspirational. I leave it for reference ... we will get back on track when we have converged as a group.
