Sourdough Mountain is a retired fire lookout cabin in the North Cascades National Park. The Park Service restored the cabin, which serves as a museum piece. The trail to the summit begins near Diablo Lake and switchbacks for a vertical mile to the lookout cabin. Although the cabin is closed, you might be able to get a look inside through the storm shutters. Designated campsites are below the summit, near Sourdough Creek. We camped directly on the summit, which offered an amazing sunset and sunrise. (Post facto, we learned that camping on the summit is prohibited). If you're in good shape, this trip gets my highest recommendations.
