Computer Networks

Homework #3

due Monday, July 10

Please answer the following thirteen questions from the text (Comer):

4.4, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.6, 5.9, 5.11, 6.1, 6.4, 6.7, 7.1, 7.2, 7.4.

For people with second edition of the text (which does not have the following two problems):

5.11 Explain how sending IP packets to nonexistent addresses on a remote Ethernet can generate excess broadcast traffic on that network.
6.7 The backup RARP servers use the arrival of a second request in a short period of time to trigger a reply. Consider the RARP server scheme that has all servers answer the first request, but avoids congestionn by having each server delay a random time before answeering. Under what circumstances could such a design yield better results than the design desscribed in the text?
